UCMC Offsite and UC MedLab Outreach Instructions: Collect specimen per standard collection procedure and send to laboratory immediately. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimens prior to transport.

Rejection Criteria

  • Common specimen rejected situations include: incorrect specimen type, insufficient volume, incorrect collection container, missing or incomplete specimen identifiers, incorrect specimen transport, or specimens outside stability limits. 
  • Room temperature specimens greater than 24 hours will be rejected.
  • Specimens in preservatives other than boric acid will be rejected.

Clinical Indications

  • Aid in the presumptive diagnosis of Legionella infection (Legionnaires’ Disease) caused by L.  pneumophila serogroup 1 in conjunction with culture and other methods.
  • The test cannot be used on environmental specimens (i.e. potable water).
  • This test will not detect infections caused by other L. pneumophila serogroups and by other Legionella species.
