Specimen Collection: Disrupt surface of lesion and collect fluid with swab. Place swab into UTM.

UCMC Onsite Instructions: Collect specimen per standard collection procedure and send to laboratory immediately.
UCMC Offsite and UC MedLab Outreach Instructions: Collect specimen per standard collection procedure and send to laboratory immediately. Specimens must be received within 2 hours. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimens prior to transport.
Rejection Criteria
- Common specimen rejected situations include: incorrect specimen type, insufficient volume, incorrect collection container, missing or incomplete specimen identifiers, incorrect specimen transport, or specimens outside stability limits.
- Specimens collected with calcium alginate swabs will be rejected.

Clinical Indications
- Aid in the differential diagnosis of HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections in patients with signs and symptoms of HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection.
- The assay is not intended for use as a screening test for the presence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in blood or blood products.
