Important Note

BKV infection may cause severe clinical disease in immunocompromised persons, including transplant recipients. 

Urine testing for BKV viremia is recommended as part of the strategy to identify patients at increased risk for Polyoma Virus Nephropathy (PVN), either as a confirmatory test for patients in whom BKV viruria is detected, or as the primary testing modality for routine screening.

Urine specimens must be collected and transported in the cobas PCR Urine Sample Kit.

Specimen Handling and Transport Instructions

UCMC Onsite Instructions: Collect specimen per standard collection procedure and send to laboratory immediately.

UCMC Offsite and UC MedLab Outreach Instructions: Collect specimen per standard collection procedure and send to laboratory immediately. Specimens must be received within 24 hours.

Rejection Criteria

 

Urine not transfered  into  Roche transport media within 24 hours. will be rejected.
