Test Code TYS Type and Screen

Important Note

A current Type and Screen is required for the transfusion of red blood cells. See "Container\Tube" below for special labeling requirements

 

Any patient with a Type and Screen order who lacks a previous blood type on file is required to have a second sample ABO verification prior to transfusion (see test ABO2ND).

 

Request for EMERGENT / LIFE THREATENING / MASSIVE TRANSFUSION PROTOCOL should be initiated by a phone call to the BLOOD BANK 2-6827.

Specimen Type

EDTA anticoagulated whole blood with written collection time, date, and initials on sample.

3 to 6 mLs 

Turnaround Time / STAT

60 minute turnaround time

Request for EMERGENT / LIFE THREATENING
MASSIVE TRANSFUSION PROTOCOL if there is no Type and Screen on record or Type and Screen is not complete
Should be initiated by a
phone call to Blood Bank at 2-6827.

Rejection Criteria

All samples without proper handwritten collection identification of initals, date (MM/DD/YY or MM/DD/YYYY), and time will be rejected.
