Elevated: >30 ng/mL

Possible causes may be neuron-specific enolase-secreting central nervous system/leptomeningeal tumor or rapid neuronal destruction from a variety of causes. In the context of dementia, elevated results may be suggestive of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
