Specimen Stability

Specimens are stable at room temperature up to 24 hours.

Note: Prolonged transport to the laboratory diminishes success of tumor cell viability in culture.

Specimen Handling and Transport Instructions

UCMC Onsite Instructions
Transport specimen at room temperature, do not freeze or refrigerate.

Specimen should be received by the cytogenetics laboratory <24 hours post collection.

Peripheral blood samples can be sent directly to Cytogenetics via tube station #345

UC MedLab Outreach institutions please contact Pathology Client Services (773-702-8287) for transport instructions.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens exposed to fixatives

Reference Values

Laboratory established reference values or published guidelines for interpretation (eg ASCO/CAP) will be included on the report.

Results reported with current recommendations of the International Standing Committee on Human Cytogenomic Nomenclature (ISCN).

Clinical Indications

Myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms

Test Components

Tissue culture
cell harvesting
