Use for all nongynecologic sources EXCEPT specimens obtained by fine needle aspiration.

Frozen specimens. Specimens submitted in expired collection vials. Unlabeled specimens

UCMC Collection Instructions

  • For brushings, immediately clip off brush tip and place in Cytolyt fixative
  • For fluids less than 20mL, immediately collect in CytoLyt fixative or send fresh to the lab
  • For fluids greater than 20mL, immediately send the fluid fresh to the lab.
  • Place a Beaker label on the container. The label must have two unique patient identifiers along with the specimen source.
  • Securely cap the specimen container and place it in a sealable biohazard bag.
  • Deliver specimen directly to Anatomic Pathology (CCD 2-470; pneumatic tube station #212 or #230) on weekdays, from 7am to 6pm,  After hours, weekends and holidays, specimens should be delivered/tubed to the Laboratory Service Center (Mitchell TW-005, pneumatic tube station #201).

Additional Information

For send-out FISH testing on brushings: place a brush tip in Cytolyt fixative and write "FISH" on the container to be sent-out, place the other brush tip in another Cytolyt. Send both containers to cytology
