Important Note

This order is limited to internal UCM use only and does not replace the need for a completed autopsy permit/form signed by the decedent's next of kin or other approved entity permitting the autopsy to be performed. For more detailed instructions, follow Patient Care Policy, PC108 Care of the Patient After Death located on the hospital Intranet page under UCM Policies & Procedures. All funeral home and autopsy consent questions should be forwarded to the Health Information Management (HIM-Expiration Desk) at 773-702-3107.

Currently, the Dept. of Anatomic Pathology does not offer autopsy services for non-UCM patients/outside deaths.

Rejection Criteria

  • Improper signatures on autopsy permit/form (not next-of-kin, or not patient legal representative).
  • Circumstances surrounding death indicate jurisdication of the Medical Examiner. 
  • Autopsy request is made AFTER the decedent is released to a funeral home and/or after embalming. Exceptions/approval will be at the discretion of the Medical Director.

Turnaround Time

Preliminary results will be reported within 48 hours of performing the autopsy.

The Final written report may take up to 60 business days

 

Testing Schedule: Monday-Friday (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) Saturday (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) 

 

Please note autopsies are started no later than 2:00 p.m.on weekdays unless with prior approval from the Autopsy Director and AP Manager.

Saturday autopsies must be scheduled with the autopsy technologist on-call using the "morgue pager" 7212. The technologist will then contact the faculty and trainees on service.

 

STAT and rapid autopsies for research tissue procurement are not available.
