Body fluid (other than spinal fluid)

Sterile container. Sterile container plus BACTEC bottles acceptable for dialysis, ascites, and amniotic fluids only. NO swabs.

For Amniotic fluid, Anaerobic culture is highly recommended. Refer to Culture, Anaerobic Bacteria

Specimen Source: Body Fluid other than blood, urine, or CSF. Sterile site fluids such as amniotic, ascitic, bile, dialysis, joint, peritoneal, pericardial, and pleural.
Specimen Collection: Decontamination of overlying skin and aspiration of fluid. Anaerobic culture is recommended for amniotic fluid.
Specimen Volume: 1 mL for joint and pericardial fluid. 10 mL for others.
Specimen Transport:  24 hr, no refrigeration
