Collection Instructions

  • Collect specimen per standard laboratory collection procedures.
  • Record on the urine container the start and stop time of the 24 hour urine collection.
  • Blood sample must be collected either within 2 days of the start of the 24 hour urine collection, or 2 days after the 24 hour urine collection has ended.
  • Urine container should be refrigerated during collection.
  • Urine container should be dropped off at the lab within 1 day after completion.
  • If 24 hour urine must be collected with a preservative for other analytes, only hydrocholric acid (14 to 47 mmol/L urine, e.g. 5 mL 10% HCl or 5 mL 30% HCl per liter urine) or boric acid (81 mmol/L, e.g. 5 g per liter urine) may be used.

Specimen Handling and Transport Instructions

UCMC Onsite Instructions:

  • Collect specimen per standard laboratory collection procedures.
  • Record on the urine container the start and stop time of the 24 hour urine collection.
  • Blood sample must be collected either within 2 days of the start of the 24 hour urine collection, or 2 days after the 24 hour urine collection has ended. Order Code CREX

UCMC Offsite and UC MedLab Outreach Instructions:

  • Samples should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection
  • Centrifuge specimens at >2500 x g for 10 minutes at room temperature.
  • Aliquot sample into plastic transport tube containing a minimum of 0.2 mL of specimen.
  • Samples must sent refrigerated at 2-8oC.
  • Record on the urine transport tube the start and stop time of the 24 hour urine collection.
  • Blood sample should be sent to UCMC at the same time as the Urine Collection to avoid cancellation of test.

Rejection Criteria

  • Common specimen rejected situations include: incorrect specimen type, insufficient volume, missing or incomplete specimen identifiers, incorrect specimen transport, or specimens outside stability limits.
  • Specimens that are clotted or grossly hemolyzed.
  • Specimens that were transported unspun/whole blood and draw time is greater than 6 hours.
  • No information on start and stop time for 24 hour urine collection.
  • No blood sample drawn 2 days before or 2 days after timed urine collection.

Additional Information

  • Results should always be assessed in conjunction with patient's medical history, clinical examination and other findings.
  • Blood should be collected during the urine collection duration to provide accurate creatinine clearance results..
  • The presence of ketone bodies can cause artifically high results in urine. High homogentisic acid concentrations in urine samples lead to false results.
  • Results from samples that are not collected over a full 24 hour period may be subject to certain inaccuracies.
