UCMC Collection Instructions

1. Cerebrospinal fluid specimen obtained by clincal
procedures.

Test Usage

CSF protein measurements are used in
the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as meningitis, brain
tumors and infections of the central nervous system.

Critical Results

None

Test Limitations

Lumbar puncture samples for CSF
protein should be collected before fluorescein is given or at
least
24 hours later. In a four tube collection series, the third tube
is
generally designated for chemistry analysis.
Therapeutic concentrations of Ca-dobesilate, levodopa and
phenazopyridine interfere with the assay. Radiopaque media
containing organically bound iodine (e.g. Hexabrix) may cause
false-high results.
Contamination with blood causes erroneously high CSF protein results.
