Specimen Collection: Patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to collection. Collect the first 20-30 mL of voided urine (the first part of the stream — NOT midstream) in a sterile specimen collection cup (available from General Stores). Female patients should NOT cleanse the labial area prior to specimen collection. Transfer the specimen to the Aptima urine specimen collection kit if 14 years of age or older.
**FOR TESTING PERFORMED ON PATIENTS UNDER 14 YEARS OLD AND ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES: The lab requires TWO samples. Please divide the urine between the Aptima urine specimen collection kit AND a sterile cup prior to sending to the lab.
Specimen Transport: Specimens should be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours but can be held at 2-30ºC for up to 24 hours.Specimens more than 24 hours old will be rejected.
