Specimen Collection for Sputum: Rinse mouth or gargle with water to remove excess oral flora. Patient must cough deeply.
Specimen Transport: 7 days, refrigerated
Other: Collect 3 specimens for acid-fast stain and culture. These 3 specimens should be collected at 8 to 24 hour intervals and should include at least 1 first-morning specimen.
