Test Usage
The assay may be used in conjunction with other serological
and
clinical information to diagnose individuals with acute or
chronic
hepatitis B infection.
The assay may also be used to screen for hepatitis B
infection
in pregnant women to identify neonates who are at risk of
acquiring
hepatitis B during the perinatal period.

Test Limitations
It has been reported that certain assays will not detect all
HBV
mutants. If acute or chronic HBV
infection is suspected and the
HBsAg result is nonreactive it is recommended that other
HBV
serological markers be tested to confirm the HBsAg
nonreactivity.
The performance of the assay has not been established for
populations of immunocompromised or immunosuppressed patients.
Additional Information
NOTE: Reactive specimens subject to
confirmatory testing by
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Neutralization assay. High level
reactivity does not require confirmation by supplemental
Hepatitis
B Surface Antigen Neutralization assay.

Method Name
Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLIA)
Reference Values
Non-reactive
A nonreactive test result does not exclude the possibility
of
exposure to or infection with hepatitis B virus. A nonreactive
test
result in individuals with prior exposure to hepatitis B may be
due
to antigen levels below the detection limit of this assay or
lack
of antigen reactivity to the antibodies in this assay.
Reject Due To
Whole blood/unspun samples greater than 6 hours will be
rejected.
LI-Heparin tubes will be rejected.
