UCMC Collection Instructions

1. Collect sample following standard collection methods
2. Within 1 hour of collection the sample must be received in
Laboratory Service Center
3. Transport room temperature (15 – 25C).

Test Usage

Iron binding capacity measurements are used in the diagnosis and
treatment of anemia.

Test Limitations

Avoid hemolysis. Higher hemoglobin concentrations lead to
false-positive values due to contamination of the sample with
hemoglobin-bound iron. In the presence of high ferritin
concentrations >1200 ug/L the assumption that serum iron is
almost completely bound to transferrin is not valid anymore.
Therefore, such iron results should not be used to calculate
Total
Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) or percent
transferrin saturation (% SAT).
Percent saturation will not be calculated or reported if
either
iron or TIBC
results are less than the
reportable ranges of those test methods.
