Test Code TEG6S TEG 6S

Important Note

The TEG 6S assay is FDA approved for testing in adults for the indications of cardiovascular surgery and cardiology procedures.

Specimen Type

Blood

Container

2 light blue top tubes, 3.2% sodium citrate, PROPERLY FILLED TO THE FILL LINE.

Preferred Volume

2.7 mL

UCMC Collection Instructions

For samples drawn by venipuncture (with 21G or larger bore needle) discard the first 3mL of blood using another blue top tube. Once a second blue top tube is completely filled, gently invert the sample tube at least five times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.

Whole blood samples that are obtained from an indwelling catheter should be collected after sufficient discard (approximately 5 mL) has been drawn to clear the line. Ensure indwelling catheter if free of clots. Alternatively, use an approved Venous Arterial blood Management Protection (VAMP) system for blood recycling. Transfer blood to the blood collection tube immediately after collection. Gently invert the sample tube at least five times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.

For TEG 6S OR orders, pack appropriately and send specimen to Blood Bank via pneumatic tube system (station 400) without delay. All non-OR orders should be directed to Coagulation Lab (station 904) daily from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm. Non-OR specimens received between 10:30 pm and 6:00 am will be tested by Blood Bank.

Samples should be sent ASAP.

For optimal turn around time, OR sample must be sent to blood bank.  If sample is sent to coag lab or lab service center, delays will be encountered.

Additional Information

All 3.2% sodium citrate light blue top tubes require a ratio of 9 parts blood to 1 part anticoagulant (example: a 3.0 mL tube requires 2.7 mL blood added to 0.3 mL of anticoagulant).

Please document any drugs affecting hemostasis as well as any recent transfusions/fluid resuscitations in the relevant parts of this order in EPIC.

TEG6S assays will be visible in Citrix (TEG Manager) without pathologist interpretation.  If pathology consultation is desired, please page 3596.
