Offsite Collection Instructions

1. Protect specimen from light.

2. Serum and plasma tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 2 hours of collection.

3. Aliquoted samples could either be room temperature at 15-25°C or refrigerated at 2-8°C prior and during transportation.

4. If above criteria are not met, specimen will be rejected.

 

NOTE: Underfilled lithium heparin sample tubes may cause elevated results. 

UCMC Collection Instructions

1. Protect specimen from light. 

2. Samples need to be received in the lab within 2 hours of collection at room temperature.

3. Greater than 2 hours must be refrigerated at 2-8°C.

4. If the specimen cannot be sent to the lab within 6 hours of collection, it must be spun, aliquoted and refrigerated at 2-8°C.

5. All unspun specimens greater that 6 hours will be rejected.  

6. If above criteria are not met, specimen will be rejected.

Measurements of bilirubin are used in the diagnosis of liver disease, in the detection of hemolytic anemia, and to evaluate degrees of jaundice.

age <24 hours: 1.0 – 6.0 mg/dL
age 24 – 48 hrs: 2.0 – 8.0 mg/dL
age 3 – 5 days: 4.0 – 12.0 mg/dL
age 6 – 14 days: 0.6 – 7.0 mg/dL
age >14 days: 0.1 – 1.0 mg/dL

Critical Results

Critical Value: < 14 days old: >18 mg/dL

Test Limitations

Cyanokit (hydroxocobalamin) at therapeutic concentrations causes significantly lower results.
Results from certain multiple myeloma patient samples may show a positive bias in recovery. Not all multiple myeloma patients show the bias and the severity of the bias may vary between patients.
